Winter driving

A car tyre in deep snow

At Matz Driver Training, we want you to feel confident and safe behind the wheel in every season.

Winter driving can be especially challenging, with snow, ice, low sun, and freezing temperatures making roads more dangerous. With the right preparation and careful driving, you can stay safe during the colder months.

10 sec Gap from the vehicle ahead

Before you set off

  • Clear your car completely: remove all snow and ice from your windscreen, windows, mirrors, lights, and roof before driving.
  • Check your vehicle: tyres should have at least 3mm tread depth and be inflated correctly; top up screenwash with an anti freeze additive; make sure all lights are clean and working.
  • Pack an emergency kit: include a shovel, warm blanket, extra clothing, torch, food, water, and a fully charged mobile phone with a charger.

On the road

  • Adjust your driving style: drive slowly and smoothly with steering, braking, and acceleration.
  • Keep a safe distance: leave at least a 10 second gap from the vehicle ahead to allow extra stopping time.
  • Use the right gear: in manual cars, pull away in second gear to reduce wheel spin. In automatics, use winter mode or manually select second gear where possible.
  • Brake and steer gently: avoid harsh inputs; brake earlier and more gradually when approaching corners or junctions.
  • Look well ahead: anticipate hazards such as ice patches or stranded vehicles.
  • Watch for low sun: winter sun sits lower in the sky and can cause glare, so keep sunglasses handy.
  • Don’t assume roads are safe: even gritted roads can be slippery, and black ice may be present.

If you get stuck

  • Don’t spin your wheels: this can make things worse by digging deeper into snow or ice.
  • Clear around the wheels: use a shovel to remove snow from tyres and under the car.
  • Improve traction: place sand, gravel, or even your car mats in front of the wheels.
  • Stay safe: if you must leave your car, ensure you are visible and arrange recovery as soon as possible.
