SkillsRules and the Law
Parking safely, day and night
Parking correctly isn’t just about leaving your car in a space; it’s about keeping your vehicle safe, following the law, and considering other road users. Whether it’s daytime or night time, making smart choices will help you avoid fines, damage, or theft.
30mph+ Roads where parked cars need sidelights at night
Night time parking: choose a safe location
- Private driveway or garage: the most secure option, offering the best protection against theft and damage.
- Well lit street parking: if you must park on the road, choose a space near a streetlight or somewhere visible from your home.
- Secure public car parks: look for places with cameras, barriers, or security patrols when parking away from home.
Night time parking: secure your vehicle
- Visible deterrents: a steering wheel lock or similar device can make your car less appealing to thieves.
- Hide valuables: never leave phones, bags, or electronics on display.
- Activate alarms and locks: always engage your car’s built in security systems; some insurance policies won’t cover theft if they aren’t used.
- Protect your keys: keep them out of sight at home and consider a signal blocking pouch for keyless entry vehicles to prevent relay attacks.
Night time parking: follow the rules
- Use sidelights when required: if parking on a road with a speed limit over 30mph, you must leave your sidelights on.
- Park with the flow of traffic: never park facing against the direction of traffic on a two way street.
- Watch for restrictions: check for local parking signs or road markings before leaving your car.
- Add extra security at home: motion activated lights or CCTV can help deter unwanted attention.
Day time parking: before you park
- Check for restrictions: look for signs, yellow lines, or controlled zones that may limit parking times.
- Pick a safe spot: choose a space with enough room to manoeuvre, avoiding blind corners or poorly lit areas.
- Be aware of surroundings: watch for pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles before you start your manoeuvre.
Day time parking: on street parking
- Park on the left: stop as close to the kerb as possible, on the left hand side of the road.
- Face the correct direction: always park with the flow of traffic.
- Apply the handbrake: make sure it’s fully on before leaving your vehicle.
- Switch everything off: turn off the engine, headlights, and fog lights.
Day time parking: parking in a bay
- Line up carefully: position your car straight and give yourself plenty of space to turn.
- Reverse slowly and smoothly: check your mirrors and blind spots throughout the manoeuvre.
- Straighten up: use your mirrors to ensure you’re central and parallel within the bay.
After parking
- Secure your vehicle: lock your car and keep valuables hidden.
- Exit safely: use the Dutch Reach technique: open the door with your far hand so you naturally turn to check for cyclists or passing vehicles.
